I) Think it through 1) Talk to your family and counselor about your schedule in and out of school. Can you work 140 hours for 1 credit? Half that time for 1/2 credit? How will you fit the internship hours? Remember that many offices stop working at 5 pm, you may not be able to work there later. What schedule would you like?
2) How will you get to the internship? We have options to work with ACPS if transportation is a concern.
3) What type of internship do you want? Complete interest inventory in Naviance or look at the results of your Strengths Explorer assessment in Naviance. Research careers of interest and save top 3 to your plan.
III) Locate an internship site - Work with Ms. Bertrand on each step. Check ideas on previous page. 1) Research companies that employ people in the field of interest. Use VA Workforce Connection as a starting point. Make a list of several companies that employ people in the field of interest and decide which would be your top choices and why. Do an internet research of your top choices. Copy this spreadsheet and share with Ms. Bertrand. 2) Create a resumé from this template and share with Ms. Bertrand 3) Practice what you want to say/write to employers and update list of contacts. Share with Ms. Bertrand 4) Tell everybody you know what you are looking for and see if you can network your way to a contact. Tell all your parents' friends and your friends' parents. That is your network. These people may know someone... 5) Call or email your preferred sites. Once you find a site that says yes, request an interview. 6) Interview: bring resume, dress professionally, prepare what to say, schedule your hours and initial duties. 7) Return initial plan to Mrs. Bertrand. 8) If you don’t have an internship site at the beginning of the school year, you have only two weeks to locate one… The add/drop date is September 5. In the meantime, you must work with Mrs. Bertrand in the library to earn your internship hours by seeking an internship.
